Just finished my latest painting. This one is for my eastern philosophy class “Competing Images of the Sage” and I titled it “Lao Tsu at the Holi Festival”. As you can see, the top image is the unfinished outline while the bottom is Lao after he was assaulted with paint. Though it sounds super pretentious this is a metaphor for the expansion and consumption of Taoism by the growing Buddhism within ancient China. For that reason I decided to stick to a more ancient Chinese “outline-like” painting style for Lao while masking it and covering it with the vibrant colors of India’s Holi festival. For years these two religions have influenced and combated each other for stake within the east. I was inspired by this spiritual battle over physical domain and I will likely continue with this theme in the future. Hope you enjoy!
